UK Schools Link Up with their Sub-Zero Teachers in an exciting first

Having recently arrived in Antarctica to carry out research, Science and Geography teachers Amy Rogers and Ruth Hollinger will be speaking to their students via a live satellite-link to their classroom on 4th December.

This exciting first for a British school will allow children in Nuneaton and Sheffield to question their intrepid teachers about their adventure and learn from their firsthand experience of their subjects.  Teachers TV will be filming it for a Spring 2008 series, currently under the working title of Antarctica: Sub Zero Teacher.

The teachers are currently acclimatising to severe and changeable weather conditions of balmy sunny days of only minus 12, to high winds and 50 degrees below.

They have now reached the Henderson Glacier where they will be carrying out some of their research and were amazed to find a collection of at least three species of lichen not officially recorded in this area before.

All their first-hand experiences of day-to-day survival and their latest research can be followed on their daily blogs on www.fuchsfoundation.org, including photos documenting life on the ice, from the food they eat, to breathtaking views of dangerous crevasses and the solitary lichen they have discovered.

Before leaving Punta Arenas for the Antarctic, Amy and Ruth both kissed the toe of Magellan’s statue, a tradition followed by all explorers going south to guarantee their safety on their return trip.  They are due back in the UK on 20 December - weather permitting.
