Fuchs Foundation Second Polar Expedition 2009
As the Fuchs Foundation’s Antarctic Expedition 2007 is screened on Teachers TV this week, the next expedition in 2009 to the Arctic is in the planning stages.
Building on the great successes of the first expedition which celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Commonwealth Trans Antarctic Expedition, lead by Sir Vivian Fuchs in 1958, the Fuchs Foundation have selected four more excellent teachers to carry out their science projects on the Arctic Ice Cap which will contribute to the teaching resources which are now available on www.fuchsfoundation.org.
Great excitement is brewing over the prospect of a 350 mile crossing over the Greenland ice cap with husky dogs and their own legs for transport. The four science projects are developing at pace and the aim is to investigate dog behaviour, zero carbon housing and human performance in extreme environments.
The four were selected during a gruelling four days in deepest Derbyshire and they now begin a year of challenge of physical and psychological preparation and the task of raising £8,000 each to contribute to the costs of the expedition.
The team is Danny Golding (University of Bedfordshire), Helena Nunan (Sir William Borlase School, Marlow, Bucks.) Nicola Rowland (John of Gaunt School, Trowbridge, Wilts.), and Andy Stephenson (Newcastle College, Tyne & Wear).
For these expeditions to continue to bring alive science and geography and inspire teachers and inspire students alike, the Fuchs Foundation has to raise £70,000 a year.
