Fuchs Foundation Arctic Expedition 2009
It is only days until four teachers depart to Greenland on the Fuchs Foundation Arctic Expedition 2009 on 1st May from Gatwick. But they will not be far from their classrooms as before they go on their journey with teams of huskies across the Greenland icecap they will be doing teaching projects in schools in Ammassalik. Comparisons will be made between the students’ cultures and the students will chat on line discussing the issues of global warming. The links between the schools have already been made by the production of DVDs about their culture and environment and these will be exchanged during the teachers’ visit.
Homework has been left for the students in the UK. They will be following the blog on www.fuchsfoundation.org and also plotting the journey across Greenland using their computers, Google earth and the teachers’ map references. They will also compare the length of a journey in the UK. The teachers will also phone in to their classes to keep them involved in real time.
During the journey itself the teachers will be comparing husky behaviour with domesticated pets, taking part in the Arctic Olympics and testing the physiological and psychological changes under extreme weather.
