Welsh launch of the Fuchs Foundation
The Cardiff based Captain Scott Society is sponsoring a reception, exhibition, dinner and lecture to publicise the launch of the exciting educational initiative of one of its members, Peter Fuchs, the son of Sir Vivian Fuchs, Antarctic explorer and a former President of the Society.
The Foundation was established 30 years ago by the scientists working for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to mark Sir Vivian’s retirement as its first Director. Its aim was to sponsor young people to take part in character building travel. Peter is re-launching the Foundation to send young science and geography teachers to the Polar Regions to carry out scientific projects in harsh conditions from which they will produce teaching materials to be published on www.fuchsfoundation.org accessible to all. He will be launching the Foundation in Wales on July 20th with the first expedition going south in November 2007.
The launch which also celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Vivian will exhibit the expedition artifacts and Peter Fuchs will give an after dinner talk on the history of the Trans Antarctic Expedition. The Captain Scott Society says that it will be an opportunity for those interested in this subject and the environment to attend and everyone is welcome.
The event is to be held at the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club at 7.00pm on Friday 20th July with a welcoming address by David Melding AM and is open to all ( Phone 02920 754830 for tickets £22.50)
